You found the right home, navigated inspections, secured financing, and made it through the paperwork. Closing brings months of decisions together in one important moment: ownership officially transfers to you.

Closing day, without the mystery

Most closings follow the same general rhythm. You will review and sign the final documents, your lender will finish funding the loan, and the title company will record the sale. Once everything is complete, the home is officially yours.

Bring what the closing team requests

Before you leave for closing, confirm the location, time, and instructions. You will generally need:

  • A government-issued photo ID
  • Any funds the title company instructed you to provide
  • Any final documents requested by your lender or title company
  • Questions—because you should never feel rushed through something you do not understand
Before you sign: Check that your name and property address are correct, the loan terms match what you expected, and any agreed-upon credits or adjustments appear properly. Closing is not a test. Stop and ask whenever something is unclear.

Your first few days

There is no need to unpack every box or complete every project immediately. Start with the practical things that make the home safe, functional, and yours.

Change or re-key exterior locks.
Locate the main water shutoff and electrical panel.
Replace HVAC filters if needed.
Store closing documents somewhere secure.
Introduce yourself to a neighbor.
Give yourself time to settle in.
